Officials at Texas A&M University are investigating the death of a student who died after falling from a dormitory balcony over the weekend, according to multiple outlets.
“It is with deep sadness that I confirm that a Texas A&M student passed away early this morning,” the statement from Vice President for Student Affairs Joe E. Ramirez Jr. read in part. “Our hearts ache for Britney’s family and friends. They have our deepest sympathies and support as they navigate this devastating loss.”
A spokesperson for the university did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for additional comment. PEOPLE has also contacted the Texas A&M University Police Department for comment.
University Police Department officers found Romero’s body in the dormitory’s courtyard early Sunday, according toThe Battalion.

The dorm is located on the east side of the campus near The Quad.

In his letter to students, Ramirez told students that counseling services are available in the wake of Romero’s death.
“We want to emphasize that Texas A&M’s top priority is our commitment to the well-being and safety of all our students,” Ramirez wrote. “We intend to conduct a thorough and comprehensive review of what happened immediately."
He added, “We encourage our Aggie community to come together to support one another, as we always do at times like this, while also praying for and supporting Britney’s family and all those grieving this tragic loss.”
