Wooded section of Sergeant Prentiss Drive in Natchez, Miss., near where a headless skeleton was located March 14.

When a man in Natchez, Miss., was pulled over, police weren’t looking for a body.
But, in short order, they found one.
In an email to PEOPLE, Natchez Chief of Police Cal Green confirmed a list of facts regarding the baffling open case.
Around 8:30 p.m. March 14, police officers pulled over the driver of a pick-up truck near the intersection of Sergeant Prentiss Drive and Fatherland Road, according to police.
It was unclear what initiated the traffic stop — Green declined to specify — but as officers approached the driver, they allegedly spotted drug paraphernalia within the vehicle.
A driver was stopped near the intersection of Sergeant Prentiss Drive (pictured here) and Fatherland Road in Natchez, Miss., leading to the discovery of human remains March 14.

That’s when officers called for backup, says Green.
Given the state of the body – the corpse decomposed down to the bones – police believe it had been decomposing there for a period of time.

Green tells PEOPLE her department is waiting on results from the crime lab “to determine cause of death and verify identity” of the decapitated skeleton.
No connected missing person’s report had been filed, according to police, making identification of the remains more difficult.
Green says the investigation is ongoing.
