The former high school valedictorian and University of Pennsylvania computer science graduate also faces charges in Pennsylvania for carrying a weapon and showing a fake ID to a police officer. He was arraigned in a courthouse near Altoona on Tuesday and denied bail.

Mangione has not yet entered a plea.

A law enforcement source told PEOPLE on Monday that officers found a “manifesto” that Mangione had written railing against the healthcare industry, writing that Thompson’s killing “had to be done” and that “frankly, these parasites had it coming.”

Thompson, 50, was gunned down in front of the New York Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan where he and other UnitedHealthcare executives were set to gather for an investor meeting.

Shell casings found at the scene of Thompson’s murder reportedly had the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” on them — a possible reference to “deny, delay, defend,” a phrase used about the insurance industry to describe a strategy of rejecting claims.

Several reports have alleged Mangione has been dealing with “debilitating” back pain in recent years with friends and family losing contact with him in recent months.CNNandThe New York Timesreported several friends have attempted to reach out to him on social media since this past summer, while theSan Francisco Standardreported Mangione’s mother, Kathleen Mangione, reported him missing to the San Francisco Police Department on Nov. 18.

R.J. Martin, a friend who says he met Mangione through a co-living space Martin founded in Hawaii, told theHonolulu Civil Beatthat Mangione “went radio silent in June or July.”
