What do you do ?
I ’m an assistant professor at the University of Maryland , Baltimore County .
What did it take to get here ?
It take many years of schooltime ! I stick a unmarried man ’s degree in biological science ( 4 days ) and then work for the Bureau of Land Management and University of Minnesota while I applied to graduate schoolhouse ( 2 years ) . After I completed my PhD in evolutionary biology ( 6 years ) , I had a postdoctoral research situation at San Diego State University ( 3 years ) . While I was a post doc , I started apply for jobs and that ’s what led to the job I have now .
Imagine you ’ve met yourself as a teenager at a life history comely : How would you describe what you do to your former self ?
My job combines molecular science laboratory enquiry , field inquiry , trip to cool countries , teaching , mentoring students , and scads of writing – specially to explain my research and ask for funding . It ’s a unlike combination every week , which I really like .
What ’s the most mutual misconception about your line of body of work ?
There ’s emphatically a stereotype about professors that I think my existence serves to expose . I ’m a Black adult female , I enjoy way as much as fieldwork , and I have a full aliveness of interest outside of the schoolroom and lab . I am not my caper , but it is a big part of my personal identity .
Any particularly proud or peculiar moment on the job ?
A proud present moment was definitely finding out I ’d been present aNational Science Foundation postdoctoral company . I bust into my Ph.D. adviser ’s insect biodiversity schoolroom and gave him a big squeeze .
There was a particularly funny event when I was doing field body of work in Japan . My collaborator , Dr. Nobuo Tsurusaki , and I caught amimizemi cicada , which has a famous call synonymous with summer in Japan . I let it go and we watch it flit away … only for a razzing to pounce down , catch the cicala , and proceed to pull it aside ! It was like being in a sketch !
Any hairy instant on the task ?
While studying abroad in Costa Rica , I contracted malaria . Also , while climbing a tree , I got lodge , stung about 20 time by hornets and almost had to ruin a digit to get undone . It was a pretty wild trip , all .
What do you never allow the house without ?
I seek to always have a few handy ampoule for gather specimens , just in case .

It ’s very difficult to get an academic vocation , and some might attend at get a professorship as a stroke of luck . I believe you make your own destiny .
