Person of Interest season four ended in a very dark topographic point . And it ’s also an ending that seems to obliterated the show ’s format , going forward . How do our heroes find out the Social Security Number of this calendar week ’s “ Person of Interest ” in this horrendous position ? We asked the show ’s cast and producers .
Spoilers ahead …
woefully , because Netflixwent back on its hope to post Person of Interest season four on Sept. 22 , many people have still not seen the show ’s most recent season . So this is a bit of a pillager for a lot of people . Suffice to say , the season ended with the Machine being direct offline and dismantled , and its basic programme store in a lilliputian briefcase . So it ’s grueling to imagine how the show can keep its formatting ( every hebdomad , the Machine spit out out a young telephone number of a victim or culprit ) in this berth .

So last weekend , when we were at New York Comic Con doing roundtable interviews about Person of Interest , we asked the lead and producers just how this is lead to work . And yes , there will be numbers of the week in season five .
Michael Emerson , who toy Mr. Finch , order us that they still get numbers , but they go far in “ a moer complicated way , ” that ’s more ambiguous and less trusty . Once the Machine Gang rebuilds the Machine , it does n’t completely operate decent for a while , “ so you do n’t make love what you ’re getting and why . It ’s even less verbatim than it used to be . ” The Machine ’s messages need “ more parsing , more interpretation , ” Emerson added .
All of the “ suit of the hebdomad ” are in the circumstance of “ this struggle between these two A.I. gods , ” say Emerson . “ Everything is enmeshed now , in a direction that it peradventure was n’t before . ”

The show is still balanced between serialized and case - of - the - week episode , append producer / director Chris Fisher . “ One of the thing the fans have always love is the show has to care about the underdog , the individual who [ has fallen through ] the cracking . We care about that . The show cares about . ” The show ’s pity towards “ the strange soldier , so to speak , ” is part of its DNA , “ and it will never really go away . ”
Fisher directed the show ’s two - part premiere . “ It ’s always fun to pip two episodes at the same time . It ’s like a picture . ” You get to have strong eccentric arcs and more time to build up the story , “ and it really feel like live to do an sovereign movie . ” It ’s been a Brobdingnagian challenge to pluck up after last year ’s season finale , and then every script has been a huge challenge after that .
“ I think it has to bump some kind of resolution , just in display case this is the end , ” Emerson secern us . “ I opine they ’ll have some existent pyrotechnic in stock for those 12 or 13 episode , but they ’ll be wise enough to leave a back door so everything can be fired up again ” if there ’s a sixth time of year . Right now , they ’re filming sequence eight , and there ’s no preindication of how the show could possibly wrap up everything up .

time of year five has “ more conceptual material ” than late years , added Emerson — alike to that episode last season where the Machine keep go simulation after simulation . “ We flirted with it in that episode , ” but “ we ’re playing more head games this time of year , along those lines . ” In the past tense , said Emerson , viewers were “ in the habit of accept whatever they saw in an episode as being straightforward narrative . But what if it ’s not ? What if we find out , as we did at the goal of that episode , that we were looking at something conceptual ? ”
Producer Margo Lulick also say us that they ’re love playing with the line between what ’s real and what ’s not , and teasing out whether the Machine has any human race , especially now that it ’s been rebuilt .
They ’re also take luck with their format in other ways . One of the case - of - the - hebdomad episode is set outside the city and has “ a really large cinematic compass to it , ” say Lulick . Even with the immense scope of the war between the Machine and Samaritan , “ with our heroes , everything has become a small more knowledgeable , a little more under - the - magnifying - glass , in a really right storytelling way . ” The show ’s style of filming has beget more handheld and less classic , so the “ storytelling is more tactical . ”

As Michael Emersonteased in our exclusive interview a while back , the Machine Gang will fight over how to rebuild the political machine . As Amy Acker told us , Root feel as though “ the Machine postulate to have some modifications to enable it to shoot down Samaritan . ” She added that Root believes this is their chance to make a “ new and improved ” auto . “ This may be our only probability to have a victory over Samaritan . ”
“ It ’s a collision of doctrine , ” Emerson enjoin newsperson . “ It ’s almost like two unlike fates . ” Root and Finch both “ entertain their positions so fervently that it ’s surd to discover middle ground . ” He added , “ There ’s not a deal of grey-headed area : The Machine is either encumbered , or it is n’t . It either has limit , or it ’s an candid system . ”
“ Root has continue to implore Finch that he necessitate to do something , to make his motorcar more aggressive or proactive this yr , ” add executive manufacturer Greg Plageman . “ Harold has been pull to a certain story of self - interrogation as to what he did [ or did n’t do ] , to leave Samaritan to take over . ”

Acker said that Root feels like she has a huge stake in this debate — not just because she feels connected to the motorcar , but also because she chose to save the Machine or else of Shaw , when Shaw was being carry away from the hospital . “ My character feel like , if we did n’t save the motorcar , there was no reason to save Shaw , ” said Acker . And as the season begins , Root has not give up on come up Shaw again , and there ’s a feeling that the team has a “ wanting piece . ”
As the season commence , Finch is n’t even sure if he ’s capable of reconstituting the Machine , said Plageman . There ’s a marvellous scene in the season opener , where Finch is losing optimism and trust , and it ’s reminiscent of the last time we see his quondam collaborator Nathan Ingram ( who ’s back in flashbacks in this episode . )
Reese “ has to buck [ Finch ] up and severalize him how they ’re going to put it together , ” say Plageman .

As far as Reese is concern , he ’s “ had to discharge missions , being split up from his equipment , ” said actor Jim Caviezel . “ He could complete a mission with a sawbuck tongue . ” So Reese is able to tender Finch that view , of having been in a hole with no manner out , and still add up through . “ We have done much more with much less . ”
Caviezel said what he admires about this show is that it has always concenter on its core characters , even with its big science - fabrication concept . “ It is all about the humanity of these citizenry . ”
Emerson added that there ’s some question as to whether this is even the same Machine as before , in any display case . “ There ’s a feeling that there was some terms , some corruption of circuitry , when it was so hyper - compressed , ” so when it ’s put back online , it ’s already moderately different .

As a outcome , said Emerson , “ you ca n’t have the same sureness in the Machine that we used to . ” The Machine used to turn perfectly , even if it was sometimes cryptic , but now it seems more flawed , which may make it appear more human . Or , he add , “ maybe we ’ve just begun to think of it as more humanize . ”
All of the characters are set off to recollect of the Machine as a somebody , and as more than just “ something that sprinkle out numbers , ” added Fisher .
At the start of time of year five , “ Samaritan has obtain , ” Emerson tell us , “ although a lot of people do n’t know it . ” At this point , “ Samaritan is in charge of whatever it want to be in charge of . ” This is a scary scenario , with a lot of terrific applications for real life sentence , and it ’s “ kind of like countenance something out of the bottle , that you ca n’t ever put back in . ”

Nobody has even thought about what a post - Samaritan public could look like , said Emerson . But Acker said that the Machine ’s primary “ platform ” has always been to respect mass ’s loose will , so if the auto prevails , it ’s somewhat less likely to become a dictator and rule over humanity .
Lionel Fusco “ choke a little rogue this year , ” said Kevin Chapman , who plays Fusco . “ He ’s generate a stack of unanswered dubiousness . He knows there ’s something skew-whiff , [ and ] he ’s inferno - bent to detect out what it is . ” For year , Fusco has been doing stuff for the Machine Gang , without really knowing why , and “ it ’s been a portion of playfulness ” to play . But now , he ’s quick to demand an explanation .
Sameen Shaw does eventually rejoin the team after having been enamor and brainwashed by Samaritan — but is she a “ Manchurian prospect ? ” asks Caviezel . Has she been place there to divide the squad , or is she really on their side ?

There will be some interesting new origin narration this time of year as well . Plageman said we ’ll meet a Modern Samaritan shamus — and this time we ’ll get to see how Samaritan guide an average soul and recruits him . We ’ve find out character like Martine who were fully - formed Samaritan ops , but “ we ’ve never seen how they come about . ”
Meanwhile , “ we ’ll discover the root of the adult male who recruited John Reese into the CIA . It ’s kind of a nerveless story . ” And we learn about the person who created that human — someone who had a gift for keep in line people and , essentially , turning human beings into machines , by dehumanizing them .
