That ’s Harvard astronomer - sprain - electronic computer expert Clifford Stoll , quoted in the November 20 , 1988 variation of the Washington Post . And yes , that ’s the same Cliff Stoll who just afew years laterwould laud that the internet ’s potential to transform the way we live on was for the most part just a bunch of ballyhoo .

Barton Gellman’s1988 articleabout the net for the Post is quite a fascinating artifact . We see the founding of term that had n’t yet entered the national vocabulary , such as “ snail mail , ” “ virus , ” and “ netiquette . ” And we see the author tardily introduce the public to the mind that this web could be something of import to their lives in the future .
We also see the monition that a more machine-accessible world will have its downside , as in the cause of computer viruses able-bodied to diffuse at lightning upper .

Using Internet and overlapping mesh , grand of man and charwoman in 17 countries swop recipes and woodworking top , debate politics , religion and old-hat cars , form friendships and even fall in love .

Internet , which begin as a Defense Department link between four research computers in 1969 , is still officially limited to university , enquiry quickness and government offices .
