On February 26 , 1929 , President Calvin Coolidge establishedGrand Teton National Parkin Wyoming ( he technically usedan executive order , but with congressional backing ) . At the metre , the park wasabout 96,000 acresand excluded the valley of Jackson Hole , which was denominate a scenic conserve , earmark ranching operations to go on there . But John D. Rockefeller , Jr. had a plan to change that .
Rockefeller firsttoured the regionin 1926 , guide on by Yellowstone Superintendent Horace Albright . Of course , Yellowstone National Park is just 10 miles north of Grand Teton , so Albright cognise his style around — and he wanted the Grand Teton area to be sum to Yellowstone . Rockefeller so enjoyed the Grand Teton experience that he spend the next few X quietly buying up land in the area through his Snake River Land Company , in the end acquiring 35,000 Accho of Jackson Hole land — much to the alarm of local ranchers . He donated that Din Land to the federal politics in 1949 , and it wasadded to the parkalong with some addition made by FDR in 1943 . In 1972 , Congress name the John D. Rockefeller , Jr. Memorial Parkway , connecting Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks , to immortalize his massive gift . Today the park encompass almost 310,000 acres .
