You in all likelihood wo n’t recognize the ancient Greece of David McGuire ’s webcomic GastroPhobia from your grade schoolhouse textbooks . An exiled Amazon warrior ( and single female parent ) and her precious boy inhabit a Greece occupy with dine - and - dashing ghosts , defeated monsters , and unrepentant silliness .
Yes , GastroPhobiaelevates silliness to an prowess physical body . Phobia forms one one-half of our titular crew , a former Amazon warrior turned barbaric huntress who wanders the Grecian woods with her roly-poly , sassy - mouthed son Gastro . But the woods of this version of ancient Greece do n’t hold simple Nemean lions or Erymanthian boar . No , Gastro and Phobia receive a far odder puppet : a grotesque variant of Bambi , warrior mockingbird , sentence travelers , and , of path , those wizardly pretty pony .
Despite McGuire ’s natural endowment for juggling anachronisms , GastroPhobia is at its heart a screw-loose sendup of Greek myth and legend , and there are cunning references to the labors of Hercules and Zeus ’ propensity for seducing women in brute form . And that pitiful Sphinx only has one riddle , and everyone already knows it .

McGuire clearly has a groovy love for vivid storytelling , from century - one-time newspaper strips to former Disney animation to manga , as well as an kinship for bad jokes , and all these strands blend neatly into the best form of ridiculousness . The tails of bump off minotaur and Iron Chef – I ’m dismal , Bronze Chef – challenge are already amusive , but they ’re made even better by the site muzzle and happily terrible punchlines ( not to mention the feet flipped in the air when say punchlines are birth ) . It ’s a rarified creator who can tell a bad joke well , but GastroPhobia will make you beaming there were so many big jokes back in ancient Greece .
