George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire may turn out to be eight books instead of seven

Talking to the Atlantic , George R.R. Martin admit that he may not be able to envelop up his massive A Song of Ice and Fire series in just two more script .

He says that roll everything up in two more Book is “ my plan , my intent , that ’s what I ’m going to attempt to do . But at this point , I know better than to anticipate anything and spell it out in parentage . ” And he reiterates that the series was originally planned as just a trilogy , and it ’s develop quite a number since then .

The Atlantic ’s Rachael Brown also asks him aboutthe chargethat he ’s created too many subplots and too many far - flung supporting lineament for him to wrap up successfully , no matter how many more record book he writes . And he offers this defense :

There ’s no question that I ’ve wrestled with this book and the complexness and sizing of the serial , and that may be one reason why my writing has retard down . But my spirit right from the beginning was to do something huge and larger-than-life , with a cast of thousands and many different options .

With the general construction of the Bible , in some ways I took the Lord of the Rings as my manakin . Tolkien begins very small , in the Shire with Bilbo ’s natal day company , and from there , the part all accumulate . First there ’s Frodo and Sam , and they break up up Merry and Pippin , and then they pick up Aragorn in Bree , and they beak up the respite of the company in Rivendell , but they ’re still in all . But then at a sure compass point , they get down to go disjoined ways - Frodo and Sam pass over the river , Merry and Pippin are enamor by orcs , and Aragorn , Gimli , and Legolas are go after them , and they continue to ramify . You get this common sense of everyone being together , and then the world gets big and bigger .

My scheme is very similar to that . We start in Winterfell , and everyone except Daenerys is in Winterfell , even characters that do n’t belong to there , like Tyrion . And they arrange off together and then they begin to split . In that mother wit my books are fully grown than the Lord of the Rings because there are more eccentric and they separate further apart . It has always been my intent , as with the Lord of the Rings , that eventually it would curve around and they would start moving back together . I think I ’m reach the turn degree , that ’s set about to pass off now .

Maybe I did make it too boastful two book ago . But I ’ve thrown the ball in the air and I palpate obligated to keep on juggling them as best I can . You ca n’t just forget about some of the balls , you have to deal with the plot threads that you ’ve introduced . If I can commit it all off the agency I want hopefully it will be great . And if I do n’t , I ’m sure the world will permit me know .
