Body - swap horror comedy Freakyis the perfect misdirection from the real - life repulsion show known as 2020 . The film is clever , peculiar , gross , all the affair you could want in a piece of amusement : it ’s also a tad disposable and obvious .

Co - write and directed by Christopher Landon ( Happy Death Day ) , Freaky star Kathryn Newton ( Supernatural ) as Millie , a driven high-pitched schooltime scholarly person see an outsider by everyone but her snug grouping of friends . One night after a football game biz , Millie has the unfortunate portion to come expression to cheek with the Blissfield Butcher , played by Vince Vaughn . The Butcher is a local serial killer most people do n’t believe exists , but live he does , and when he tries to shoot down Millie with a mysterious unexampled tongue , the two swap bodies . The Butcher is now in the body of Millie , and Millie is now in the trunk of the Butcher .

Freaky sire most of its mileage from the childlike truth that it ’s funny to see Vaughn pretend like a teenage girlfriend and chilling to see Newton act like a psychotic orca . To that end , there is a deluge of scenes where people run away from Millie ( as Vaughn ) think she ’s the Butcher , and people buy the farm because they think the Butcher ( as Newton ) is Millie . Very few thing in the film get deeper than that . jocularity , killing , jokes , kills , and Millie trying to figure out how the replacement happened to reverse it . That ’s basically it .

A few moments attempt to go a small deeper , such as Millie ’s family relationship with her mom Coral ( Katie Finneran ) and her crush on a fellow student name Booker ( Uriah Shelton ) . But even those interactions do n’t do much except delay the inevitable face-off and serve to make awkward situations for Vaughn . The scene also work to align the audience with Millie , but that ’s not difficult . She ’s not the killer .

gratefully , the fact that most of Freaky is obvious and a little repetitious is n’t a huge hurt because of the performance of the stars . Both Newton and Vaughn beautifully and joyfully bribe into the swap . Vaughn ’s intact body language changes for most of the film ; he ’s loose , fluid , shy , and , somehow , almost cunning . Once he ’s fiddle Millie , there ’s no doubt there ’s a teenage girl in there . ( If anything , Vaughn ’s Millie is more of a stereotypical teen than when Newton plays her . ) On the flip side , Newton ’s sweet-smelling , manage Millie instantly gets erased when she ’s the Butcher . She ’s stoical . She does n’t flash . She ’s terminator - esque . Both performances give the whole cinema a strong drive force , especially when they get cheek to font .

The moment of the switch.

It helps too that it ’s an radius - rated moving-picture show , so the putting to death and gore are never held back . In particular , the celluloid ’s opening — where Vaughn is actually the Butcher — features several gruesome , jaw - dropping kills I ’d never seen before in the slasher writing style . now , that instauration sucks the hearing into the film and Landon rarely allow up . The Butcher is an evil villain , but we love to watch him , whether he ’s a adult man or a teenaged girl .

The great kills , constant humor , and ingenious blending of genres make Freaky well deserving a lookout . The only real downside to the motion picture is that it ’s so intimate , but consider it ’s bray up two ideas we ’re already very used to seeing , that ’s expected . All in all , if the worst you’re able to say about a motion-picture show is splitting hairs over stratum of delectation , that ’s still enjoyment .

Freaky open Friday , November 13 .
