Kepner had his helping hand cut off in 1999 after his streptococcus throat infection caused sepsis . Before he receive the hand transplantation in 2009 , he used prosthetics which allow him to not only book down a job , but even beat back a car .
Kepner figured if the transplant was stillborn , he could just get them removed and go back to prosthetics . The Dr. who oversee Kepner ’s case , Vijay Gorantla , toldTIMEthat “ it ’s uncertain if Kepner would be able to use prosthetics if the hands were removed , and that stringent physical therapy would be required . ”
While his life might meliorate if they were to part amputate the transplanted hands , Kepner is tired of the unforgiving surgeries . “ I am not go through all those operations again , ” he said .

Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee , the operating surgeon who performed the transplant , said that Kepner ’s case is strange . “ The other three patient role have had meaning functional return in their hired hand and have been able to resume completely autonomous living , including driving , working , and croak to school day , ” he explicate .
