Mean book review are a fact of life nowadays . And if you spend any clip in a workshop , you ’re go to hear some pretty harsh feedback . But Cecilia Tan , the erotic questioning fabrication brain behindthe Magic University Bible , has some brilliant advice on her blog .
Not only does Tan offer some great ideas about how to deal with abrasive critique of your piece of writing , but she talks about reading story in her slushpile — and finding that the report that she had the most dubiousness about was commonly the one that her readers cease up get it on the most . She add :
Same thing in my MFA write workshop in grad school . The stories or chapters or poems that the class argued the most about – mean some of the students hated it and some loved it – were often the ones I was sure were actually the best stories . I receive myself sometimes taking a fellow bookman aside and evidence them , essentially , do n’t let the haters get you down . Sometimes you walk out of a shop feeling like the spirit ’s been beat out of you because the reaction was so negative from other students . “ Do n’t feel spoilt , ” I ’d say . “ Getting a hike out of them is the proof that you ’re in reality onto something , you ’re writing is in reality working . When the news report does n’t turn , nobody really cares . ” The writer by and big who were able to take that negative feedback as a positive sign were the ones who last on to put out and have careers as pro . The I who were too discouraged to keep blend … didn’t .

The whole matter is brilliant and very much worth meter reading , if you ’re a writer who gets to discover or read other people ’s opinions on your stuff . [ Cecilia Tan ]
