Here ’s the affair about The Walking Dead : Even when it ’s jolly good , it can still be very frustrating . And there ’s probably no in force model of that than last night ’s “ Time for After , ” an episode that oversee to be tense , interesting , and extremely aggravating , mostly all at once .
The episode is primarily Eugene ’s , as he grapples with : the Book of Revelation that Dwight is the traitor , the task of getting rid of the zombi surrounding Sanctuary given to him by Negan , the sick of Gabriel ’s exhortation to assist him smuggle Dr. Carson to Hilltop for Maggie , and then eventually procure strong drink , because he ’s having hassle sleeping at night for some reason .
Eugene is in all right form , churning out memorably bizarre talks that rivals Negan : “ What crank my shaft is being safe . ” To Gabriel : “ You look like a tater in cocksucker casserole . ” explain to someone why he needs spirits : “ Ergo I need the giggle juice . ” But the real interrogation is whether Eugene has any affection left for Rick and the Alexandrians that Negan nobble him from , whether he ’ll put on the line himself to help save his former “ traveling associate , ” as he shout them .
Of naturally , Eugene is an admitted coward whose primarily goal is his own survival of the fittest , which has earned him a lot of grief from the protagonists of the show ( as if they all have n’t also done some bad / selfish thing for survive ) . But while hold up “ crank up his shaft , ” he does still desire to serve people . He does n’t really need to hurt Rick and the others . He does n’t rat out Dwight ’s treason to Negan , rather tell Dwight he ’ll keep his mouth close if he just stops helping Alexandria which , not for nothing , has endanger his life as well as all those workers by surrounding them with zombie . He ’s ostensibly move principally by his own survival , but he would wish everyone to know . He just wants himself to live the most .
I say ostensibly because Eugene volitionally endangers himself multiple time this episode to keep others alive He does n’t fink on Dwight , despite the fact that Negan will absolutely kill him if he come up out Eugene knows ( or that Dwight could have defeat him for knowing ) . He launch his iPod - laden toy plane in hopes of tempt the zombies away from Sanctuary with its medicine , despite being held at point by Dwight ! And , when Daryl and Tara finally enact their plan to barge in that garbage motortruck into the walls of Sanctuary , it ’s him seeing the carnage he do it his former jaunt companions have wrought — not just on the Saviors , but those downtrodden workers Rick was try out to keep alert — that enrages him . Prince Eugene of Savoy decides that Alexandria and the others can go to hell ; he tells Gabriel to go to hell ; he devises a programme to save Sanctuary and those in it ( which we do n’t get details on ) ; and even then he still ca n’t quite convey himself to rat out Dwight .
Yes , he ends the sequence guzzle strong drink straight from the bottle , and surely some of that is because he ’s aid Negan preserve his reign of machismo - fascism , but it ’s just as valid a read that he ’s in the end process how many time his life was in peril this episode . He was certainly terrorise , but he ’s not a Sir Noel Pierce Coward . Even if he is still purely motivated by self - preservation , he ’s just seen AHK ( his acronym for the Alexandria - Hilltop - Kingdom coalition , which I will 100 percentage be using in the future ) deliberately trying to get everyone in Sanctuary killed , include himself . Why ? To survive . Why should n’t Eugene be allowed to have the same precedence for himself ?
Of course , what Eugene does n’t have it away is that Rick and AHK are n’t behind this new assault , but instead a rogue performance by Daryl and Tara , which is the first shoes “ Time for After ” gets frustrating . But piece , it would be much more satisfying if Rick ’s plan was break for a rationality that does n’t postulate other heroes being silent - dumbs .
And speak of dumb - dumbs , let ’s jibe in with Rick , shall we ? He ’s still being imprisoned by the Garbage People , although he ’s also been stripped to his skivvy . He ’s take out briefly so that one of the Garbage Men can draw him and so the Garbage Lady can take pic of him to sculpt “ after , ” because these people really are some kind of bizarre performance artistic production group that survived the zombie apocalypse but never lost their dear of artistic production or challenging the societal norms that all buy the farm horribly all those years ago .
Rick is consider out again when it ’s “ time for after , ” wherein the Garbage Lady has her men bring out that weird Mad Max zombi with the spiked helmet for Rick to have a replay , which is aggravating in the extreme since Rick ’s cause for being there at all is so unintelligent . Rick acquits himself well , though , in that despite being tie up he snaffle the pole the Garbage People use to steer the Spike Zombie while restrain him away ; Using the pole as a faculty — yes , despite it still being weld firmly to a zombie ’s skull — Rick wangle to kill the Garbage People who are there , rip the zombie ’s head off it body ( more or less making the staff the world ’s everlasting morning principal ) and throws Garbage Lady to the ground , inches away fron the Spike Zombies discerp , growling psyche .
And Rick expect her to join up again .
The Waking Dead is a show about the dead reanimating with a desire for nothing but human flesh , but Rick ’s idiocy here is well the most unrealistic aspect of this show . The Garbage People have not only betray him once , kill many Alexandrians , but squeeze him to crusade the Spike Zombie when he first encounter them . He digress , alone , back to their dumpsite to offer them another chance to join up , which is moronic , and then , when they imprison him and force to struggle Spike again , and he wins , he offer them yet another prospect to connect him .
He should n’t trust the Garbage Lady to let him out the front gate unless he ’s holding a gun to her head , but he lets her go , and she tells her men to support down . I will say , though , I really appreciate how ballsy / terrible the Garbage mass are in that after Rick has just shown he can murder Jadis right then and there , and she ’s betrayed him once already , she demands all the Saviors ’ stash when they win . Rick is adamant on them only getting a one-fourth ( the Garbage Lady assay to mark a one-fourth and a luck to sculpt Rick nude , but no - go ) , but even I , who am obsessed with the protagonist show pardon and pity , would be fine if Rick said , “ avail us and we wo n’t assault you for what you did . ”
There are only two options here , and they both suck . Either the Garbage multitude really will check dependable to their word this clock time because Rick made an exceedingly dumb gesture to them , which found on what we have it off should not dissemble them in the slightest . They dead should deceive him again . But if they do bewray him , then it proves Rick is the imbecile he seems to be , and that ’s going to be awed , too . There ’s no win here .
bad , Rick ’s foolishness calls into interrogation his current plan to get the Saviors to surrender , thus contribute authenticity to Daryl and Tara ’s Operation : Kill ‘ Em All . But we ’ll never know , because when Rick leads the Garbage People to see what he ’s done to Sanctuary , he finds one of his sentries dead . He ca n’t attain any of his sniper on the coms . And when he at last beget to gamy ground to survey the Saviors ’ compound , he sees not a single zombie in slew . The engagement is over , and the war continues .
manifestly , Eugene ’s mysterious programme play , whatever it was , and I distrust we ’ll find out the hand truck crashing into the edifice made Eugene ’s architectural plan possible . And I also suspect that this attempt by the Alexandrian forces to toss off everyone inside Sanctuary — instead of just holding a zombie siege — has made Negan ’s workers so terrified of these outside force that they ’ll adhere totally to him for security , when before they might have been excited to get by their hold . And I distrust the Garbage People may just take reward of this new quandary . Rick Grimes and the Alexandrians snatch defeat from the jaw of victory yet again .
I ’ve still mostly enjoyed this time of year , guy wire . I ’m just , well , frustrated that after next hebdomad ’s midseason closing curtain we may cease up almost precisely where we were when we began . Well , except for one thing . Rick dally his deal in the season finale . With Sanctuary loose , it ’s Negan ’s turn to counterattack .

Gabriel has multiple infection from smearing molder corpse bit all over himself . This makes an non-finite amount of sense to me , and I appreciate The Walking Dead dipping its toe into a bit of verisimilitude .
Negan offers Eugene his helping hand , and a baffled Eugene nervously attempted to buss it . When Negan explain he was actually offering him a handshake as a sign of his regard , it was actually kind of sweet , in a twisted sort of way .
Props to Andrew Lincoln , who look great without await like he ’s been on a unbalanced superhero movie use dieting / regime . That would have looked crack - weird , and I take account it . Also , rowr .
There are no more RPG rockets . Rosita used the last one to blow up a single gallant .
Yes , I know her name is Jadis and they ’re called the Scavengers . But “ Garbage People ” is just far too accurate for me to not use .
