In developed country all over the earthly concern , driving continues to get safe . The one elision to that rule is the United States , where driving bear on to get more dangerous . regrettably , there are so many factor that make driver in the U.S. more dangerous , there ’s no eloquent bullet that will magically set thing . One thing that would unquestionably help , though , would be if drivers would plainly slow down , peculiarly in metropolis . In an attempt to make that happen , Road & Track reportsthat California justpassed a bill that will command railcar to discourage driverswhenever they tug more than 10 mph over the speed demarcation .
The California Senate just passed SB 961 , which would require one-half of all young cars build or sold in the State Department to include inactive speed limiters by 2029 , and by 2032 , that material body will arise to 100 per centum . If it passes the Assembly and is signed into law , the new regulation will enforce to all passenger vehicle , including truck , as well as jalopy . And while there will be nothing physically stopping someone from labour more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit , adding bleep and flashing warning will at least make doing so much more annoying .
According to the bill , the “ passive intelligent speeding help system ” that would be required would be “ [ an ] integrate vehicle organization that uses , at minimum , the GPS fix of the vehicle compare with a database of posted speed terminal point , to shape the speed limit , and utilizes a brief , one - time ocular and audio sign to alert the machine driver each time they exceed the speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour . ” It would also default to the mellow speed limit if , for whatever reason , there are multiple hurrying limits in the area you ’re driving .

This is n’t exactly a new idea , either . Starting in July , the European Union will also begin ask similar passive stop number limiters in new cars , and both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also abide follow out a similar regulation nationally . Assuming it passes , California would simply be the first country in the res publica to need it . And if it does pass , do n’t be surprised if more states end up following California ’s lead .
