Friday ’s sequence of Battlestar Galactica — the last we ’ll be assure of the human race - and - cyborgs psychodrama until next year — was call Revelations . The episode live up to its name , which was a relief after an integral season holding our breaths waiting for sure disconsolate robo - secrets to come to spark . Oftentimes when a show gives us the big reveal , there ’s a letdown . Not so with Friday ’s sequence , which gave us a brief , surreal glimpse of something all the characters have seek for nearly the integral show . And that glimpse was both sorrowful and fascinating , if not entirely unexpected . Spoilers ahead !
There were a lot of great present moment in this episode , written by former Deep Space 9 scribes Bradley Thompson and David Weddle , and the action came fast and intense . Moments after Adama arrives back on Galactica with cylon D’Anna , the careful house of scorecard that the sleeper agent cylons have built begins to tumble down . D’Anna do it on the button who the final five are , and as she step off the bird she asterisk meaningfully at at the four we already know about . Without give away what she knows , she harbinger that the four should feel detached to get be with their hoi polloi on the Base Ship . Until those four are on panel the Base Ship , D’Anna aver she ’ll continue holding the President , Baltar , and several archetype surety .
Foster takes the sweetener first , feigning that she wants to go to the Base Ship to give birth the President ’s medication . But once she get in , she tells Roslin off in a shivery speech and clearly desire nothing more to do with mankind .

Meanwhile , Tigh decides to take the high road and finally confesses his cylon status to Adama . realise his lifelong friend has been the enemy all along , Adama has a kind of mini - equipment failure which is genuinely scarey . After guzzling alcoholic drink and punching his fists bloody on a mirror , the Admiral lamentation in his son Lee ’s arms until Lee takes matter into his own hands . And by “ hands ” I imply the air lock , where Tigh has probably wanted to go more time than we can depend .
One of the major idea in this episode is how much the humans are unforced to sacrifice to get to Earth . Because the prophesies have state that the final five cylons have been to Earth and know where it is , the man require to bear on to those cylons until they ’ve get the coordinate of the satellite they hope to make their new dwelling house . Before Adama leaves the Base Ship , Roslin makes him call that he ’ll blow up the entire Base Ship rather than hand over the cylons . And as Tigh stands trembling in the air lock , Lee is ready to give his founder ’s greatest friend to convince D’Anna to release her human surety .
We know the cylons want the last five for more complicated reasons than the humans do — the five hold religious significance to them , as well as the key to Earth . ( Making all of this more complicated is the fact that D’Anna says there are only four of the net five in the fleet , leaving some to think over that the fifth cylon is dead or was never in the fleet — though the imprisoned Six evidence Roslin that she could “ sense ” the final five nearby . )

Before Lee can make any forfeiture , however , Starbuck find out that the Viper she repulse home from her still - unexplained journey to Earth now contain the coordinates to the planet they ’ve been searching for all this time . The coordinate show up on its instrument panels after Anders , Tyrol and Tigh feel a unusual obsession to chaffer the ship and hale Starbuck along . After she gets over her shock that Anders is a cylon , she realizes the humans make what they wanted from the final three — and in a dramatic scene , she races to the air lock to stay Tigh ’s execution and start the eldritch appendage of forging a true coalition between the human being and Johnny Reb cylons .
Though the two groups make an uneasy peace , and the human beings partake in Earth ’s coordinate with the Cylons , it ’s surd to forget the ruthlessness the man have display in this instalment . Roslin was unforced to give not just herself but all the other human hostages on the Base Ship . And Lee was clearly inclined to toss out all the stealth cylons — masses who had been his friends and allies — out the airlock . Could any planet , any homeland , be deserving such brutal ritual killing ?
As the fleet prepare to jump to Earth , we see everyone celebrating : Lee practically rips off his shirt with joy , and Roslin and Adama almost make out . ( Sadly , we do n’t get to see Romo dancing with his imaginary cat . ) It ’s hard to understand why everybody is so psyched when they all retrieve so vividly how terrible it was last clip they try out to settle on a satellite with Cylons . What makes them think Earth will be dissimilar from New Caprica ? Or even from Caprica itself ?

When we make it at Earth , those dark questions seem retroactively to be the only ones we should have been asking all along . The gorgeous aristocratical major planet is correct where the Viper ’s coordinate enounce it would be , and as the landers tear through foamy white swarm , I enunciate a little chant to myself : Please do n’t make this square . Do n’t make it be the 1980s , or the scope - magnon / oafish era , or the Roman Empire . Do n’t make it be not really Earth , or a cliffhanger where we have to wait 8 months to notice out whether Adama ever gets to touch Earth ’s soil .
I got my last regard first . Via grainy “ alien world ” cam , we see Adama hollow into the sand of a beach . . . only to see it crumble between his finger as a Geiger counterpunch registers that it contains massive actinotherapy . The landing place gang is surrounded by the burned , weather - dumbfound ruins of what looks like it was once a city on the ocean . It ’s hard not to think the place is imagine to be New York , given that the place is so clearly intended to evoke that last moment from Planet of the ape where we see the Statue of Liberty and realize humanity destroyed itself long ago .
The Earth the fleet finds is so unexpectedly depressing that the fit was a consummate , tragic joy to determine . It also remained on-key to the heart of the show , which is at its core deep dystopian and apocalyptic . This is not a show about happy rapprochement and exploration . It ’s about the shatter ruins of a coinage that has warred and buckle down itself into an evolutionary corner . Battlestar Galactica pull us to look at how potentially horrifying the time to come could get , and I ’m glad show Maker Ron Moore and David Eick were n’t afraid to keep horrifying us .

Of of course the discovery of the radioactive dirtball that is Earth is just setup for the show ’s final season , so finally I ’m sure we ’ll see a light in what appears completely nightmarish now . Already , we can set about asking challenging questions . And no , I do n’t mean “ who is the fifth cylon , ” which I could frankly care less about at this gunpoint . I entail the bragging query , such as why we ’ve been told repeatedly ( by various semi - religious physical body ) that “ all of this has happened before . ” Did the Earth human produce a bunch of cylons who bomb the crap out of them , jump - starting the hejira that led to the founding of the twelve dependency ? Are the final five ( or four , or whatever ) come from those original , Earth - bombing cylons ?
More challenging still : Who are we proceed to receive on Earth ? Because I ’m sure the major planet is n’t empty .
You ’ll have to wait until the “ first quarter ” of 2009 to bump out . But you know what ? I do n’t sense as ripped off by that as I thought I would . The season conclude on a cheering bill — if that “ comer on Earth ” scene had happened in a movie , I would have considered it a helluva great closing . Since this is TV , I can say it gave good cliffhanger , leaving me with really expectant enquiry that I wo n’t well forget about in the intervening months ( especially sinceMoore and Co. have promise at least one TV moviebefore the year ’s end ) . This was season ender really worthy of the hope BSG offered when I first watched the miniseries and thought , “ Holy shit this show is too awful for idiot box . ”
