mass need to screw about Attack The Block . Why ? Because Joe Cornish ’s taut chase motion-picture show has raised the saloon for foreign encroachment films everywhere . Hey Hollywood , you ’ve been bested by a crowd of 16 - year - honest-to-god Brit brats .

venial spoiler ahead …

While you may not know theater director Cornish by name , you ’ve definitely seen his work . The foresightful time Edgar Wright collaborator has work on plenty of fan favorites , from The Adam and Joe Show to Spielberg ’s Tintin . But this is his directorial debut .

The assumption for Attack The Block is childlike : Five kids protect their South London “ block ” — what we call a undertaking — from an alien invasion . But alternatively of follow a group of adorably scrappy small rascals , we ’re saddled up with a battalion of intimidate hooded brigand . Cornish wastes no time bring forth to the heart of the stereotype that circumvent this grating London neighborhood . At the opening of the moving-picture show we see the gang pluck a local nurse at tongue - full stop . It ’s rough , but there ’s a intellect behind it .

The Good :

It ’s reliable . While we were tempted to judge this film “ the pixie for the Xbox multiplication , ” we did n’t . Attack the Block does n’t just attract to a small demographic . Somehow , Cornish manages to turn an alien chase film into an deeply rousing role discipline about the nestling on the cylinder block . And all without telling one single mother fucker tale . Not one metre does a character reflect on the rigor of his or her life — if anything they make twinkle of it . Which , at times , makes it all the more middle - curtain raising to the audience . But more often than not , the audience is given enough mention to link the dots themselves . slow the teens translate from a multitude of Compys to actual human beings .

The actors . Yes , Nick Frost is in this film being delicious and uproarious , as always , but his role really takes a back seat to the kids . Not since the day of Haley Joel Osment ’s “ I see dead citizenry ” has a unseasoned doer managed to go down on up all the strain in the theater the way John Boyega did in Attack the Block . Boyega , who plays the group ’s leader Moses , has a steely stare - down that will make the hair stand up up on the back of your neck opening . And the balance of the radical course off each other in such a positive manner , you could n’t help but get sucked into their domain ( and their fight against the aliens ) . The young worker are not only phenomenal but , gratefully , age appropriate . Cornish made it a spot to cast local actors who are actually the geezerhood that they play , and we give thanks him for that .

The Look : Cornish shot this movie on location at the municipal trapping towboat in South London . And while these giant structures were at one point the meridian of architectural futurism , they ’re now crumbling reminder of poorness . It ’s a marvelous juxtaposition of hopeful retrofuturism and the failure of reality to live up to our expected value . The setting gives the film a form of alien anti - wonderment . Instead of the Spielbergian family dinner shooter of the Dad losing his mind over a bowl of mashed potatoes , these kids break bread ( so to talk ) on the couch of their weed dealer .

It ’s fun . The sense of humor and action mixed together dead . There is n’t a dull moment to be had . It shames every single alien film we ’ve determine since District 9 ( include Avatar ) when it come to pacing and heart . But most importantly it ’s fun , nail biting , laugh - out - loud , skilful , sometime fashioned alien chasing fun . As for the aliens themselves , you’re able to see a little glimpse of them in the trailer above , but we ’re not going to cocker any of the beastly goodness right now . You ’ll have to see it !

The Music : The score is by the Basement Jaxx . Nuff ’ said .

The Bad :

Nothing much to say here . Perhaps some of the British jargon will get turn a loss in transformation in the States , but we followed along fairly easily . Cornish is aware of the cultural water parting and told us directly that he made an feat to build up a vocabulary of repeated UK slang so foreigners could easily pick up on it . candidly , it ’s refreshing to watch a film that does n’t over - explain every contingent and inside reference . This pic let the audience figure some thing out for themselves .

Bark Watch

It ’s a bit trigger-happy . We ’re not sure if all of the bodies and origin were necessary . Most of what you see was slightly off photographic camera , but it was still pretty bloody .

The Verdict :

Go see it , and tell your Friend . film like this only make out around once in a while , if you want Hollywood to make better scientific discipline fiction natural process celluloid , then you take to stick out motion-picture show like Attack The Block . But besides all that , the picture show is solid . From script , casting , to carrying into action it stand on its own .
