A source in Apple ’s engineering recently tell us that they havebig fightswith the industrial design team . We knowthey lostthe iPhone 4 battle , but they succeed back in the 80 , as Andy Hertzfeld drop a line for Folklore.org :

The first Mac image were deal - made using a technique holler “ wire - wrap ” , where each case-by-case signal is routed by wrap an single wire around two pins . Burrell [ Smith]wire - wrapped the first prototype himself , and then others were done byBrian HowardandDan Kottke . But wire - wrapping is fourth dimension consuming and error prone .

By the spring of 1981 , the Mac ’s computer hardware design was static enough for us to make a print circuit circuit board , which would allow us to make prototypes much more quickly . We recruited Collete Askeland from the Apple II radical to lie out the board , and after working with Burrell and Brian for a distich of workweek , she knock out the design and commit it off for a modified yield run of a few dozen plank .
We started having weekly direction encounter in June 1981 , which were attended by most of the squad , where we discussed the issues of the calendar week . At the 2d or third meeting , Burrell salute an intricate blueprint of the PC board layout , which had already been used to build a few working epitome , blown up to four times the actual size .
Steve [ Jobs]started critiquing the layout on a strictly aesthetic basis . “ That part ’s really pretty ” , he predicate . “ But look at the memory chip . That ’s atrocious . The product line are too close together ” .

George Crow , our recently hired analog engineer , interrupted Steve . “ Who cares what the PC board looks like ? The only affair that ’s authoritative is how well that it works . Nobody is going to see the PC board . ”
Steve react strongly . “ I ’m gon na see it ! I require it to be as beautiful as potential , even if it ’s inside the box . A bully carpenter is n’t fit to habituate lousy wood for the back of a locker , even though nobody ’s going to see it . ”
George started to argue with Steve , since he was n’t on the team long enough to know that it was a losing battle . Fortunately , Burrell interrupt him .

“ Well , that was a difficult part to layout because of the memory bus . ” , Burrell respond . “ If we change it , it might not work as well electrically ” .
“ OK , I ’ll tell you what , ” said Steve . “ Let ’s do another layout to make the board prettier , but if it does n’t influence as well , we ’ll change it back . ”
So we endue another $ 5,000 or so to make a few boards with a newfangled layout that routed the retentivity motorcoach in a Steve - O.K. fashion . But for certain enough , the new plug-in did n’t go properly , as Burrell had portend , so we tack back to the honest-to-goodness design for the next running play of prototypes .
